Senior Writing Examiners look at ways of improving efficiency for ESOL exams

3 December

New procedures to allow reduced turnaround times for marking and increased test availability was the focus of a recent event hosted by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations in November.

Forty of the most senior examiners for Writing tests attended the 2009 Cambridge ESOL Principal Examiners Conference. The technology discussed included new online systems for examiner administration and marking to significantly reduce the turnaround time for candidate results. Thomas Eckes from TestDAF Institute in Germany began the day by presenting his thought-provoking research into the assessment of a test taker’s writing ability. There were also a number of focus groups with valuable input from key Principal Examiners who discussed future developments for assessing English language ability.

Moving forward, Cambridge ESOL plan to consult this group on a regular basis to ensure new systems and online support services are effectively deployed in the future.
