Vietnam government to work with Cambridge to improve language proficiency
23 November
The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations have begun working on two new projects that will aim to improve English language proficiency of teachers and students in Vietnam. The department of Cambridge University will start working with the International Co-operation Department and the Primary Education Department of MOET this month. They will develop benchmarks of English language proficiency for students and teachers based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Opportunities for learners of English to gain an internationally recognised qualification from Cambridge ESOL will increase as part of these projects.
The new agreements will have a major impact on the learning and teaching of English in Vietnam, explains Duncan Rayner, Development Manager for Cambridge ESOL:
“We’re very excited to be working with the Ministry on this project which will be a benefit to thousands of students and teachers in Vietnam each year. We will share our expert knowledge of assessment to help develop and standardise high quality teaching and testing of English in Vietnam.”
Dr Nguyen Loc, Vice Director of the National Institute for Educational Strategies and Curriculum, one of MOET functional departments, said: “This is a strategic cooperation, playing a key role in the innovation process of English teaching, learning and assessment in Vietnam, with the aim of making English a competitive advantage for Vietnam, as has been stressed upon by MOET and materialized in the Government Decision in English teaching and learning 2008-2020”.
These projects are in line with the Government’s 2008 decision to officially adopt the CEFR as the English language exit benchmark for students from primary up to tertiary level.
