Book from Czech Republic wins Cambridge ESOL’s innovation award
5 March
The Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation which was launched this year has been awarded to “Global Issues in the ELT Classroom” – an English Language Teaching book published by Spolecnost pro Fair Trade based in the Czech Republic.
James Thomas and Martina Pavlickova, who worked on the book, received the award at this year’s ELTons 2010: a prestigious award ceremony organised by British Council to recognise innovation in the English language teaching. The book provides learners with the vocabulary and functional language needed to discuss important topical issues such as child soldiers and carbon footprints – some of the challenges the United Nations’ Millennium Development goals aim to alleviate by 2015.
Speaking at the event held in London on the 3 March, Christine Nuttall, Director of Communications and Stakeholder Relations at Cambridge ESOL – who presented the award said:
"ELT has always been a really dynamic and forward-thinking sector with constant innovation in teaching, publishing and assessment. This book is an excellent example of how you can approach teaching English in a way that is both creative and relevant. We’re delighted that this new award showcases this kind of outstanding work.”
The Judges’ comments were: ‘This seems very innovative to me. I have not seen other materials based around these particular UN goals or so consistently and authentically around these types of issues’
